Water is our most precious resource. We drink it daily and need it for our everyday living. We use water for all aspects of our lives such as cleaning, washing, and cooking as well as tending to our garden.

We don't realise how much water we use when we turn on the faucet to brush our teeth or put clothes in the washer. But all of this adds up. On average, a person uses 80-100 gallons per day. If you have more people in your household, that amount will increase.

We have always been told that we should conserve our natural resources to limit the effect on the environment. But there is also another reason as to why you should save water and that is your water bill.

Your water bill is charged by reading the water meter every quarter. Every drop is counted, so you must keep an eye on your water usage so the bill doesn't skyrocket.

You can follow these tips and suggestions on ways to save water and money on your water bill. Remember, every drop counts and you pay for what you use, so use wisely!

Showerheads and Taps

There are water-saving devices that you can attach to your shower head and taps. These reduce the amount of water flow coming out of the fixtures. They are quite easy to install and can be purchased from most major homeware stores.

Limit showers to 5 minutes or less. You will use less water per minute with shorter showers.

Toilets

Whenever you flush your toilet, you don't think about the amount of water that is used per flush. There are flush buttons specifically designed to limit how much water goes down the bowl. It is always best to remember to use a half flush for liquid waste and a full flush for solid waste. Check your toilet tank regularly for leaks and any blockages.

Bathroom

One way to reduce water usage at home and especially in the bathroom is to turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. Don't keep the tap running if you are not using it. If your faucet leaks, you may need to replace a washer. Taking care of leaks will save on water bills and your plumbing in the long term.

Kitchen

Reduce your water consumption in the kitchen by ensuring you install environmentally-friendly appliances. Water-efficient fittings on taps will use less water. If you need to defrost food items, leave the food in the refrigerator overnight or use the microwave. You waste gallons of water per minute by trying to defrost under the running tap.

Using the right-sized pots will eliminate the overuse of cooking water. And any leftover water can be used for the garden.

Recycle water bottles and fill them up for drinking water instead of using a new cup every time. Fewer cups mean less cleaning up, and less water use.

Dishwasher

To reduce water consumption when cleaning dishes, using a dishwasher is more energy-efficient than hand washing. Manually washing uses more running water. It is best to ensure your appliance is filled up so you can clean more dishes in one go rather than having to use the machine multiple times.

Washing Machine

You should only ever use your washing machine with a full load of laundry. Using cold water with a cycle also helps save money on your water bill. Purchase appliances that have a 5-star energy rating as these tend to be more energy-efficient and lower energy costs.

Garden

Plants require water to grow but constantly using the garden hose to water your garden can affect your water bill. You could save money and the environment by keeping greywater aside and use it to water plants and gardens. Greywater is from baths, washing machines, and sinks. Not the best to consume but is an alternative to feeding your garden and cleaning.

Water Tank

Installing the correct hot water system for your property will make all the difference if you want to reduce your water bill. There are many different brands and models that are perfect for the size of your home and how much water you use daily. The position of the hot water tank plays a big part in the water travelling to the shower and other fixtures in the property. The further away the water heater is from where you need it can determine the amount of water used. It means more space and time for water to travel through the pipes.

Hidden Leaks

Hidden water leaks can be a big factor in water wastage. You never know you have a concealed leak until you receive your water bill and it has doubled.

If you suspect an issue with the pipework such as hammering sounds inside the wall, rumbling taps, and larger than normal utilities bill, contact a licensed plumber and they can help locate even the most hidden pipe leak using specialised leak locating equipment

Other Tips on Ways to Save Money on Your Water Bill

  • Wash your car during certain times of the day and preferably on top of grass. You can water the grass as well as wash the car at the same time.

  • Make sure to follow water restrictions that are in place in your state.

  • Capturing any water that is running from the faucet and saving it for other use. And reuse cooking water for plants

  • Plug your sink and do any rinsing out of that instead of a running tap.

  • Choose plants that are appropriate for the climate and soil in our area. Try to water your garden before 10 am and 4 pm in the hotter months of the year to prevent evaporation.

Saving Money On Your Water Bill

That concludes our guide on the best ways to save money on your water bill and do your part by preserving our most precious natural resource. If you are still receiving a high water bill, make sure to contact your local plumber as there may be an issue you have not yet detected. Good luck!
