Repair is usually the better option when the leak comes from a serviceable inlet valve, outlet valve, cistern seal, hose, isolation valve or accessible connection and the toilet suite is otherwise sound. Replacement is more likely when porcelain is cracked, compatible parts are unavailable, the suite has repeated faults or the repair would not provide reliable value.
Confirm where the water starts
Dry the toilet and floor, then observe where water first appears and whether it happens while the toilet is idle, filling or flushing. - Water running into the pan: The inlet valve, float, outlet valve or cistern seal may need servicing or replacement.
- Water at the hose or isolation valve: A connection, washer, hose or valve may have failed.
- Water around the base: The pan connection may be leaking, but water can also track down from the cistern or supply.
- Cracked porcelain: Stop using the toilet. A cracked pan or cistern should not be patched or relied on.
When does replacement make sense?
Replacement may be appropriate when the porcelain is cracked, the suite is unstable, internal parts are obsolete, previous repairs have failed or a licensed plumber finds broader damage. A compatible replacement must suit the existing set-out, water connection, drainage arrangement and available space. There is no reliable fixed price without an inspection. The quote depends on the confirmed fault, toilet design, part availability, access, labour, location, current market conditions, whether the pan must be removed and whether drainage, flooring or wall repairs are also required.
Ask for an itemised quote that states the diagnosis, repair or replacement scope, included parts, labour, testing, removal and disposal, GST, exclusions and how further faults will be approved.
Limit damage safely
If clean supply water is actively leaking, close the toilet isolation valve only if it is accessible and turns easily. Never force a seized valve. If wastewater may be escaping, stop using the toilet, avoid contact and keep others away. Check how urgent a leaking toilet is if water is uncontrolled, spreading or near electrical fittings.
