How much water does a toilet flush use, and what does it cost?

A common Australian dual-flush toilet uses about 3 litres for a half flush and 4.5 litres for a full flush. Check the WELS label for the actual figure.

A common Australian dual-flush toilet uses about 3 litres for a half flush and 4.5 litres for a full flush. Older single-flush toilets may use substantially more. The exact volume is shown on the WELS label, product information or cistern markings.

Check the toilet’s actual water use

Toilet typeTypical water-use pattern
Modern dual flushSeparate lower-volume half flush and higher-volume full flush, commonly 3 and 4.5 litres.
Older single flushOne full-volume flush, which may use considerably more water than a modern suite.

Do not identify efficiency from the flush buttons alone. Compare the WELS registration and litres per average flush when choosing a water-efficient toilet, then confirm the new suite is compatible with the existing set-out and plumbing.

What does a flush cost?

The cost of one flush depends on the toilet’s actual litres per flush and the current water-usage tariff that applies to the property. Tariffs vary by provider, customer category and billing period, so a fixed amount would quickly become inaccurate.

Use the water-usage rate on the latest bill and the toilet’s verified flush volume to estimate the household impact. Fixed water and wastewater service charges do not usually change with each flush. A usage-based wastewater charge should be included only if it appears on the bill and applies to the property.

Look for water that is not part of a normal flush

A toilet that keeps running, leaks into the pan or phantom flushes can waste water between uses. If you hear ongoing refilling or see ripples in the bowl, check why the toilet keeps running and arrange repair rather than treating that flow as normal flush consumption.

If an older suite uses excessive water or has repeated faults, contact our licensed toilet replacement plumbers. They can confirm a compatible water-efficient option and provide a site-specific quote based on the suite, set-out, access, labour, materials, location and any faults found.
