How do you choose a water-efficient toilet using its WELS rating?

The most water-efficient toilet is the compatible residential model with the highest WELS star rating and lowest litres per average flush.

The most water-efficient toilet is the compatible residential model with the highest WELS star rating and lowest litres per average flush. Check the exact model on the Australian Government WELS register rather than relying on terms such as “water-saving toilet” or “high-efficiency toilet”. No single model suits every Sydney home.

Compare WELS ratings and flush volumes

A higher WELS star rating indicates greater water efficiency within the toilet category. For an accurate comparison, check:

  • Litres per average flush: the best overall comparison figure.
  • Full-flush volume: water used for a full flush.
  • Half-flush volume: water used for a reduced flush.

Comparing only the half-flush volume can be misleading. Confirm the current registration and figures for the exact toilet suite in the official WELS product database.

Check suitability before buying

The toilet must fit the existing plumbing and clear waste reliably. Poor compatibility or flushing performance can lead to repeat flushing and negate expected water savings.

Check the pan type, set-out, dimensions, cistern arrangement and clearances. The set-out is the position of the waste connection relative to the wall or floor. The pan and cistern should also be a registered matched suite so its published WELS rating applies.

Do not disconnect or alter sanitary plumbing yourself. Ask an appropriately licensed plumber to confirm the set-out and drainage compatibility and complete the replacement.

Buying checklist

  • Confirm the exact model’s WELS registration.
  • Choose the highest practical star rating among compatible residential toilets.
  • Compare litres per average flush, then full- and half-flush volumes.
  • Confirm the pan type, set-out, dimensions and cistern configuration.
  • Have a licensed plumber check the existing connection before ordering.
