No. In Sydney, you cannot install your own hot water system unless you hold the NSW licences required for each part of the job. Installation generally involves regulated plumbing and may also require licensed electrical or gasfitting work.
Even replacing a system with a similar model involves reconnecting and commissioning pressurised water, temperature controls and an energy supply. Incorrect work can cause leaks, scalding, electric shock, fire, gas leaks or carbon monoxide exposure.
Which licensed trades may be required?
The system type and existing services determine which trades are needed:
- Licensed plumber: Completes water pipework, valves and discharge connections within their authorised scope.
- Licensed electrician: Completes fixed wiring, circuits, isolation switches and hard-wired appliance connections for electric storage or heat-pump systems.
- Licensed gasfitter: Completes gas supply and appliance connections for gas systems. They must also address applicable flue and ventilation requirements within their authorised scope.
One person may hold several relevant licences, but a plumbing licence alone does not necessarily authorise electrical or gasfitting work. The installers must assess the site and commission the system in accordance with current requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions.
What can a homeowner safely do?
Limit your involvement to preparation and observation. You can:
- provide the existing system’s model details and photographs
- discuss a preferred location, subject to the installer confirming suitability
- clear ordinary belongings from the access route
- keep children and pets away from the work area.
Do not disconnect or alter pipework, valves, gas fittings, flues, wiring, circuits or safety controls. Do not attempt to move a heavy unit into position.
If the existing system is leaking, keep clear of water near electrical equipment. You may close a clearly identified and safely accessible water isolation valve, but do not approach wet wiring, a switchboard or gas equipment. If you smell gas, leave the area, avoid flames and electrical switches, and call the gas distributor’s emergency number from a safe location. Call 000 if there is an immediate danger.
