What are the electrical requirements for a hot water system in NSW?

Requirements vary between storage, instantaneous electric, heat-pump, solar-assisted and gas systems with electrical components. There is no universal cable size or circuit-breaker rating.

Circuit protection and isolation

Depending on the heater and installation, the electrical provisions may include:

  • A dedicated final subcircuit: Many fixed electric heaters need their own circuit, but this depends on the appliance specifications and the electrician’s assessment.
  • Correctly rated cable and protection: Cable and circuit-breaker selection must account for rated load, cable length, installation method, ambient temperature, grouping and other derating factors.
  • RCD protection: New or altered residential final subcircuits may require RCD protection under the wiring rules applying in NSW. An RCBO can provide residual-current and overcurrent protection, but the electrician must confirm the requirements for the particular circuit.
  • An isolating switch: A hardwired heater needs a compliant means of isolation for servicing. Its type, location and switching arrangement depend on current wiring rules and the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Protection from exposure: Outdoor wiring and equipment must be suitable for moisture, weather and physical damage. Systems with interconnected components or multiple supplies require coordinated isolation.

An existing circuit should not be assumed suitable for a replacement heater, particularly if the new unit has a different load or connection arrangement.

Cable, breaker and supply capacity

An electrician determines the cable, breaker and hot water heater power supply requirements from the appliance data and site conditions. Rated watts divided by supply voltage provides only an approximate operating current; it is not enough to select a cable or protective device.

The assessment should cover:

  • switchboard condition and available space
  • consumer mains and overall supply capacity
  • earthing and existing protective devices
  • cable route, length and installation conditions
  • the condition and suitability of any existing circuit.

Instantaneous electric and other high-load heaters may require circuit, switchboard or supply changes rather than reuse of the existing connection.

Who can connect the heater?

Fixed wiring, circuit alterations, testing and connection must be performed by someone appropriately licensed for that electrical work in NSW.

A homeowner can read an accessible appliance label, record the model number and identify the switchboard circuit labelled for hot water. Do not remove covers, test wiring, change protective devices or connect the heater: mains electricity and pressurised water create serious risks.
