There is no fixed expiry date for household LPG. As at July 2026, no nationwide or NSW end date had been announced for bottled or bulk LPG supplied to Australian homes. Future availability will depend on government policy and whether suppliers continue servicing each area.
Is household LPG being phased out?
Household LPG was not subject to an announced national phase-out as at July 2026. NSW had also not announced a general requirement for existing households to stop using compliant LPG appliances.
Rules affecting new buildings, developments, gas connections or appliances do not necessarily ban LPG or require existing appliances to be removed. Check the current NSW gas phase-out position and government guidance before investing in a new LPG system because requirements can vary by location and may change.
Does the decline of automotive LPG affect household supply?
Fewer automotive LPG bowsers do not mean bottled LPG for cooktops is ending. Although both fuels are forms of liquefied petroleum gas, automotive and household LPG have different specifications and distribution channels.
Service stations supply automotive LPG to vehicles. Households generally receive exchange or refillable cylinders, or tanker deliveries to a bulk tank. A service station removing its LPG bowser therefore does not establish that household cylinder or bulk delivery is ending.
What should Sydney LPG users do?
An existing compliant LPG cooktop does not need to be replaced solely because automotive LPG is becoming harder to find. When comparing LPG and natural gas for a cooktop, consider local supply availability and the appliance’s approved fuel type.
Before buying a new appliance or planning long-term use:
- confirm that a supplier services your postcode and supports your cylinder or bulk-tank arrangement
- check current Australian and NSW requirements
- have the installation assessed by an appropriately licensed gasfitter.
In NSW, installing, altering, converting or disconnecting an LPG appliance or gas installation is licensed gasfitting work. Do not change jets, regulators, pipework or the appliance’s nominated gas type yourself; incorrect work can cause fire, gas or carbon monoxide hazards.
