Some LPG cooktops can be converted to natural gas, but only when the manufacturer approves conversion for that exact model and specifies compatible components. In NSW, an appropriately licensed gas fitter must carry out the conversion and safety checks. Before proceeding, compare whether LPG or natural gas better suits the property.
Do not open gas connections, substitute components or adjust gas pressure yourself. An incorrect conversion can cause a gas leak, poor combustion or carbon monoxide production. If you smell gas, avoid flames and electrical switches, leave the area and arrange emergency gas leak assistance from a safe location.
Check whether your cooktop is convertible
Find the exact model or product number, then check:
- The data plate, provided it is accessible without moving, disconnecting or dismantling the cooktop.
- The manufacturer’s manual or current model documentation.
- Whether the specified natural gas conversion kit or approved components are available.
- Whether it is a dedicated LPG model rather than a convertible appliance.
Do not use a universal kit, parts from a similar model or injector jets that merely appear to fit. A licensed gas fitter can confirm compatibility before parts are purchased.
The property also needs a suitable natural gas supply and correctly sized connection. A gas fitter must assess whether an existing gas line can be extended or branched without compromising the installation.
What the conversion involves
The gas fitter follows the model-specific instructions, installs the approved components and configures the cooktop for natural gas. Depending on the model, this may involve changing injector jets, fitting or configuring the specified regulator, and adjusting burner settings.
They must also check gas pressure, ignition, flame performance and the completed installation for leaks in accordance with applicable requirements. Changing jets alone may not complete the conversion. Ask which gas compliance documentation applies to the completed work.
