A licensed NSW gas fitter must isolate the supply, disconnect the cooker, permanently cap or terminate the redundant connection and test the affected installation for leaks. There is no reliable standard price because the scope depends on access, the appliance, the connection and the condition of the pipework.
An onsite assessment is the best basis for a quote when the connection, cabinetry or pipework is not clearly visible. Pricing also varies with location, labour, materials, current market conditions, urgency, removal requirements and whether further faults are found.
What should the quote include?
An itemised quote should state whether it covers:
- attendance and licensed gas fitter labour;
- safely isolating and disconnecting the appliance;
- permanently capping or terminating the redundant gas connection;
- testing the affected installation for leaks after the work;
- any gas compliance documentation required for the completed work;
- GST and reasonable access to the connection; and
- moving, removal or disposal of the cooker.
Moving a heavy or built-in cooker, repairing unsuitable pipework and removing the appliance from the property may be separate parts of the scope. Confirm these items before accepting the quote.
What affects the cost?
The main variables are:
- Restricted access: Fixed cabinetry or a heavy built-in appliance can require extra labour.
- Pipework condition: Corroded, damaged or unsuitable pipework may require additional work before it can be left safe.
- Termination location: An accessible outlet is generally simpler to cap than a concealed or poorly positioned branch.
- Dual-fuel connection: A licensed electrician may also be required for a dual-fuel cooker. Electrical work may not be included in the gas quote.
- Timing and location: Travel, urgency and attendance conditions affect the final quote.
- Removal and disposal: These services should be identified separately.
Do you need a licensed gas fitter?
Yes. Disconnecting a gas appliance and altering or capping consumer gas pipework is gasfitting work that must be completed by a person with the appropriate NSW licence or authority. Licence details can be checked through NSW Fair Trading.
Do not loosen fittings or attempt to cap the gas line yourself. If you smell gas, avoid flames and electrical switches, leave the area and call your gas distributor’s emergency number from a safe location. Call 000 if there is immediate danger.
Disconnecting a cooker does not abolish the property’s gas service. Permanent service abolishment is a separate process involving the gas retailer or network and is not part of a standard appliance disconnection.
