In NSW, a licensed electrician must complete any fixed electrical wiring for an oven or cooktop. A licensed gasfitter must connect, disconnect or alter a gas oven or cooktop. A factory-fitted plug may be connected to a suitable existing outlet when the manufacturer permits it and no electrical, gas or cabinet work is required.
Check the appliance and connection type
- Plug-in oven: You may plug it into an existing, undamaged outlet where the manufacturer permits. Do not change the outlet, circuit, plug or cord. If the outlet is loose, scorched or unsuitable, stop and contact a licensed electrician.
- Hardwired electric oven: A licensed electrician must disconnect, connect or alter the fixed wiring. Do not remove covers or test wiring yourself.
- Electric or induction cooktop: Built-in cooktops commonly require a dedicated fixed connection. A licensed electrician must confirm the circuit and complete any wiring work.
- Gas oven or cooktop: A licensed gasfitter must connect, disconnect, alter and test the gas installation. An electrician is also required if the appliance needs fixed electrical wiring.
Do not rely on appearance to identify the connection. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and any plug that is visible without removing panels or disturbing services. Follow the specified requirements for ventilation, clearances, levelling and securing.
Changing from an electric cooktop to gas may also require a suitable gas supply, cabinet and ventilation assessment before an appliance is chosen.
What can you safely do yourself?
You can:
- read the installation instructions
- check the appliance and opening dimensions
- clear access for the installer
- inspect visible plugs, cords and outlets for obvious damage without dismantling anything
- position a plug-in oven only if it is safe to lift, the instructions permit it and no services need to be disturbed.
Leave all electrical and gas connections, safety testing and any required securing to the appropriate licensed tradesperson. After gasfitting work, the gasfitter must test the installation and complete the applicable NSW gas compliance process.
If you smell gas, avoid flames and do not operate electrical switches or devices in the affected area. Leave immediately, call the gas network’s emergency service from a safe location, and call 000 if there is immediate danger. Stop using an appliance with damaged wiring, scorching or an uncertain connection and contact a licensed electrician.
