Is LPG better than natural gas for cooktops?

LPG is not inherently better than natural gas for cooktops. When a cooktop is designed and correctly configured for its fuel, either can provide comparable cooking performance.

The better choice depends on supply availability, site-specific running costs and whether you prefer a continuous mains supply or managing LPG cylinders.

LPG and natural gas differences

FactorLPGNatural gas
PerformanceDetermined by the cooktop’s rated burner design and correct LPG configuration.Determined by the cooktop’s rated burner design and correct natural gas configuration.
SupplyStored in cylinders that require monitoring and replacement or refilling.Supplied continuously where a mains natural gas connection is available.
ConvenienceUseful without mains gas, but cylinders must be managed through a supplier. No cylinder changes; convenient if the home is already connected.
Total costMay include gas, cylinder purchase or rental, delivery and changeover fees.Usually includes usage charges and a fixed daily supply charge.

If long-term supply is part of the decision, check how household LPG availability may change rather than assuming that reduced automotive LPG availability applies to domestic cylinders.

LPG’s higher energy content by volume does not automatically produce a hotter flame. Compare the manufacturer-rated burner output for each cooktop rather than judging performance by fuel type alone.

No single cost comparison stays accurate for every home. Obtain current quotes for the property and compare supplier terms, local tariffs, cylinder arrangements, delivery, household consumption, other gas appliances and any installation work. If mains gas is available, a licensed gasfitter may also need to determine whether the existing gas line can be extended or branched.

Which should you choose?

Natural gas often makes sense when the home is already connected and total gas use justifies the fixed supply charge. LPG may be more practical when the cooktop is the only gas appliance or mains gas is unavailable, provided cylinder supply and pricing are suitable.

The fuels are not interchangeable without the correct appliance configuration. A cooktop must be approved for the selected fuel and use the manufacturer-specified injectors or jets, regulator arrangement and operating pressure. Check whether an LPG cooktop can be converted to natural gas for that exact model before buying parts or planning a fuel change.

Do not connect or convert a gas cooktop yourself. Incorrect gas work can cause leaks, fire, explosion or carbon monoxide exposure. In NSW, this work must be completed by an appropriately licensed gasfitter. Contact our licensed gas cooktop team to confirm appliance compatibility, assess the supply and complete the required gas work.
