To attach a compatible tap-mounted water filter, remove the tap aerator, fit the manufacturer-specified adaptor and rubber washer, then screw the filter on by hand. Run cold water slowly, check for leaks and flush the cartridge as directed in the current product manual.
Check the filter and tap are compatible
A tap-mounted filter usually requires a spout with a removable threaded aerator. Removing the aerator exposes an internal or external thread that must match an adaptor supplied or approved by the filter manufacturer.
Keep the tap off while checking it. Protect the finish with a soft cloth and use the supplied aerator key if needed. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance before fitting a filter to a pull-out, spray, irregular or unthreaded spout.
Attach the filter
- Prepare the sink: Cover the drain and place a towel in the basin to catch small parts.
- Remove the aerator: Looking at the outlet end, turn the aerator anticlockwise. Keep it for later refitting.
- Select the adaptor: Match the exposed tap thread to the adaptor specified in the filter manual. Do not force an adaptor that binds, sits crooked or does not turn smoothly.
- Fit the washer: Place the supplied rubber washer exactly as shown in the manual. It must sit flat because it usually forms the watertight seal.
- Attach the adaptor and filter: Start each connection squarely by hand to avoid cross-threading. Support the filter’s weight and tighten only as directed; overtightening can damage the washer, thread or housing.
- Test and flush: Turn on cold water slowly and inspect the adaptor and filter connections. If they remain dry, divert water through the cartridge and flush it for the time or volume specified by the manufacturer.
Do not use hot water unless the filter instructions expressly allow it. Turn off the tap immediately if water sprays from the joint or any part moves under pressure.
If it does not fit or leaks
Turn off the tap and remove the filter. Confirm that the adaptor matches the thread and that the washer is correctly positioned, clean and undamaged. Reassemble the parts squarely by hand, then retest with cold water.
Do not improvise adaptors, force mismatched threads or use thread-seal tape unless the manufacturer requires it. Stop using cracked, unstable or persistently leaking components.
