A water filter usually leaks after installation because the cartridge or O-ring is not seated correctly, tubing is not fully connected, a threaded fitting is loose or cross-threaded, or the housing is damaged or incorrectly tightened. The same faults can cause leaking after a filter change.
Shut off the filter’s water supply and release pressure using the manufacturer’s procedure before inspecting it. Do not dismantle pressurised fittings or simply tighten everything further; excess force can damage plastic housings, seals and threads.
What the leak location indicates
Dry the assembly, then restore the water slowly and watch for the first point that becomes wet. Water can track along tubing or down the housing, so the lowest drip may not be the source.
- Housing rim: The O-ring may be dirty, twisted, pinched, missing or damaged. The cartridge may also be incorrectly seated, or the housing may be unevenly engaged or cross-threaded.
- Push-fit tubing connection: The tube may be damaged, cut unevenly or not inserted to the required depth. Some models require a retaining clip. Check the manufacturer’s instructions before disconnecting anything.
- Threaded inlet or outlet fitting: The connection may be loose, incompatible, incorrectly sealed or cross-threaded. Thread and sealing requirements vary, so do not add tape, sealant or force unless the manufacturer specifies it.
- Housing or fitting body: A hairline crack can result from impact, overtightening or a faulty component. Keep the supply off. Pressure-bearing parts must be replaced with compatible components, not patched or glued.
- Filter tap, supply valve or drain connection: This suggests an installation-joint leak rather than a cartridge seal problem. Keep the supply isolated if the joint is part of fixed plumbing or cannot be accessed safely.
What you can safely check
Limit checks to accessible, user-serviceable parts identified in the filter’s current instructions.
- Prevent damage: Put a towel or container under the filter and keep water away from power points and appliances. If electrical equipment is wet, do not touch it; isolate power only if you can do so safely.
- Isolate and depressurise: Shut off the correct water supply, confirm the flow has stopped and release pressure as directed for that model.
- Inspect the cartridge and O-ring: Check the cartridge’s orientation and seating. Look for dirt, twisting, flattening, cuts or pinching on the O-ring. Use only an exact compatible replacement and manufacturer-approved lubricant, if specified.
- Check visible connections: Look for incomplete tubing insertion, cracks, damaged threads or uneven housing engagement. Do not force threads or keep tightening a leaking plastic housing.
- Test cautiously: Reassemble the user-serviceable parts as directed, restore water slowly and watch each joint. Isolate the supply immediately if leaking resumes.
Stop troubleshooting if the isolation valve fails, the housing is cracked, threads are damaged, fixed or concealed plumbing is leaking, or the source remains uncertain. Keep the water off. If output is also weak, check whether slow water flow through the filter points to a blocked cartridge or pressure issue.
