To connect a line filter, isolate and depressurise the water supply, connect the filter’s IN port to the incoming water and OUT port to the tap or appliance, then restore the supply slowly, flush the filter and check every joint for leaks. Follow the filter manufacturer’s current instructions throughout.
Check the filter and connections
Confirm the filter’s rated use, installation position, connection size and approved fitting type. Match the pipe or tube diameter exactly, and use only manufacturer-approved fittings, seals, inserts, locking clips and brackets suitable for potable water.
Find the IN and OUT markings or flow-direction arrow. The arrow must point from the incoming supply towards the downstream tap or appliance. Reversing the water filter inlet and outlet may prevent correct operation.
Do not force mismatched connectors. If fixed pipework must be cut or altered, stop and use a NSW-licensed plumber. Do not cut concealed pipework, as nearby water, gas or electrical services may be damaged.
Connect the inline filter
- Isolate and depressurise the line: Close the relevant isolation valve, open the downstream tap and confirm that water flow has stopped. Place a towel or container beneath the connection.
- Position the filter: Allow the clearance required by the manual. Avoid sharp bends, twisting or sideways force on the ports.
- Prepare only permitted user-connect tubing: If the manufacturer allows connection to existing flexible tubing without altering fixed plumbing, cut the tube squarely with the correct tool. It must be round, smooth and undamaged.
- Connect the inlet: Attach the incoming supply to IN. For an approved push-fit connection, fit any required tube insert, push the tube to the specified insertion depth and install the supplied locking clip.
- Connect the outlet: Attach OUT to the downstream tap or appliance using the same approved method.
- Use the specified seals: Follow the manual for threaded or compression fittings. Do not apply thread tape to push-fit or compression sealing surfaces unless the manufacturer expressly requires it.
- Support the filter: Install its bracket or clips so its weight does not hang from the pipe or tubing.
Flush and leak-test the filter
Restore the water supply slowly and inspect every connection while it is pressurised. Check for droplets, movement or slow weeping, then recheck after the system has remained under pressure.
If a joint leaks, isolate and depressurise the line before touching it. Do not adjust a fitting while it is spraying or unstable.
Flush the water filter for the time or volume specified in its manual before using the water. If the fitting type is uncertain, fixed plumbing requires alteration or a connection will not seal, contact our licensed Sydney water-filter installation team.
