Yes. Higher water pressure can increase your water bill if it raises the flow rate from open outlets or worsens leaks. Pressure itself is not billed; metered water usage is.
When higher pressure uses more water
Pressure drives water through the plumbing, while flow rate is the volume delivered over time. A tap, shower or irrigation outlet running for the same period may discharge more litres when its flow rate increases.
Higher pressure may not increase total water consumption when:
- an outlet has effective flow control
- you use a fixed volume, such as filling a bucket to the same level
- you shorten the running time to compensate for the faster flow
The effect therefore depends on the fixture design and how long the water runs.
Excessive pressure can also increase metered use by worsening leaks through worn seals, valves, toilet cistern components or flexible connections. Some leaks may not be immediately visible. If pressure feels unusually forceful, check why household water pressure is too high before assuming the bill alone identifies the cause.
Check an unexplained increase
Compare the bill’s metered usage with previous periods, noting any changes in occupancy, showers, irrigation or appliance use. Also check whether the increase relates to usage rather than other bill charges. Work through the common causes of an unexplained water bill increase before changing any pressure-control equipment.
Look for safe, visible signs of water loss:
- dripping taps or showers
- toilets that keep running after flushing
- damp areas, pooling or unexplained water sounds
- irrigation operating unexpectedly
With all known outlets and water-using appliances off, observe the property meter. Continued registration may indicate water use, although automatic systems or appliances could be responsible and the meter will not locate the cause.
