A sudden increase in household water pressure is commonly caused by a faulty pressure-reducing valve, changed mains supply conditions, thermal expansion during water heating or recent plumbing work. Constant high pressure at several outlets points towards the incoming supply or pressure control. A temporary rise during or after heating suggests a hot-water-system issue.
Likely causes
- Pressure-reducing valve fault: Where fitted, this valve controls incoming pressure. A fault or incorrect setting can cause sustained higher pressure across several outlets.
- Mains supply change: If neighbouring properties noticed the same change, contact the relevant water utility, usually Sydney Water within its service area, to ask about supply conditions or local work. This does not confirm which side of the property boundary contains the fault. Sustained higher pressure can increase water use and bills when it raises outlet flow or worsens a leak.
- Thermal expansion: Water expands as it heats. In some closed plumbing systems, this can create temporary pressure spikes during or shortly after a heating cycle.
- Recent plumbing work: A new valve, backflow device, hot-water unit or other alteration may change pressure behaviour, particularly if the increase began immediately afterwards. The difference between a pressure-reducing valve and an RPZ matters because the devices have different purposes.
- A fixture change: Stronger flow from one tap may result from a cleaned aerator, removed restriction or replacement fixture rather than higher pressure throughout the house.
How to identify the likely source safely
- Compare several outlets: A change at one fixture suggests a local issue; a consistent change throughout the house suggests the supply or property pressure controls.
- Record the timing: Constant pressure indicates a sustained supply or control issue. Short-lived increases after water heating are more consistent with thermal expansion or a hot-water control fault.
- Ask a neighbour: A simultaneous change at nearby properties makes a mains-side change more likely, although it is not conclusive.
- Check the timing of recent work: Tell the plumber what was installed or altered and when the pressure changed.
Do not dismantle or adjust pressure-reducing valves, backflow devices or hot-water safety valves. Never cap a safety-valve outlet. Arrange prompt assessment if high pressure persists or you notice leaks, banging pipes, damaged hoses, or continuous or forceful safety-valve discharge.
