A 75 GPD membrane is generally better for modest drinking and cooking needs. Choose a compatible 100 GPD reverse osmosis membrane when household filtered-water demand is higher or the storage tank needs to refill sooner. Higher capacity does not automatically mean better-quality water.
Compare demand and system compatibility
GPD means gallons per day and describes nominal production under specified test conditions, not guaranteed output in your home. Check whether the manufacturer uses US gallons before converting the rating to litres per day.
RO systems usually produce treated water gradually and store it in a pressurised tank. Membrane capacity therefore affects tank recovery more than the filtered water flow rate at the tap.
Do not assume a 100 GPD membrane can replace a 75 GPD membrane. It must be compatible with the system’s:
- membrane housing and dimensions
- flow restrictor
- booster pump, if fitted
- feed-water pressure and temperature range
- storage tank and other specified components.
A mismatched membrane or flow restrictor may prevent the system from operating as designed. Follow the system and membrane manufacturers’ compatibility guidance; do not modify pressurised plumbing components yourself. Why actual production may be lower
Real production is often below the rated GPD because membrane ratings are measured under defined test conditions. Output can fall with:
- low feed-water pressure
- cold feed water
- high dissolved-solids levels
- increasing storage-tank back-pressure.
Compare models using the same manufacturer test conditions rather than headline capacity alone.
Does 100 GPD mean better water quality?
No. Capacity measures production, not filtration quality. Contaminant rejection depends on the specific membrane’s certified performance and operating conditions. Compare model-specific rejection specifications rather than assuming a 100 GPD membrane produces cleaner water.
Capacity should be weighed against the wider drawbacks of reverse osmosis, including reject water, maintenance and tank space.
