How can you test for parasites in water, and which filters remove Giardia?

Testing for Giardia requires the right laboratory analysis and a correctly collected sample. For filtration, choose a system certified for cyst reduction or with an absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller.

Testing for Giardia or another parasite requires a laboratory method suited to the suspected organism and a sample collected exactly as the laboratory directs. A home water test kit or routine chemistry panel cannot be assumed to detect parasites.

How should the water be tested?

If mains water may be affected, first check current advice from Sydney Water, NSW Health or the relevant supplier. They can confirm whether testing is already underway and what residents should do.

For a private supply or property-specific concern, ask a laboratory accredited by NATA for the relevant water analysis whether it tests for Giardia, Cryptosporidium or the organism of concern. Obtain the correct sterile container and follow its sampling, transport and time-limit instructions. Poor collection or delayed delivery can make a result unreliable.

Do not drink suspect water while waiting for advice or results. Seek medical advice if anyone may have been exposed or develops symptoms.

Which filters can remove Giardia?

An appropriately rated filter can remove Giardia cysts. Choose a complete system certified to NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 specifically for cyst reduction or removal, or one specified as having an absolute pore size of 1 micron or smaller. Do not rely on a nominal micron rating or the words “water filter” alone.

Look up the exact model in the certification body’s current listing and confirm the cyst claim. Certification under a standard does not guarantee cyst reduction unless that claim appears for the product.

An absolute rating states the maximum pore size under specified test conditions. A nominal rating indicates only that the filter captures a proportion of particles of the stated size, so it does not provide the same assurance.

Sediment filters, activated-carbon cartridges and filter jugs should not be assumed to remove Giardia. Reverse-osmosis systems can remove parasites, but verify the complete model, correct cartridge or membrane, housing and seals.

How do you keep the filter effective?

Follow the conditions applying to the tested system:

  • Use the specified housing and replacement cartridge.
  • Keep pressure and flow within the manufacturer’s limits.
  • Replace the cartridge at its stated interval, capacity or warning indication.
  • Follow all cleaning, storage and maintenance instructions.
  • Check for damaged seals, incorrect assembly or possible bypass.

Poor maintenance can allow bacteria to grow in a water filter or let water bypass the treatment stage. Do not dismantle pressurised equipment or alter fixed plumbing yourself.

What if the water may be contaminated?

Do not drink suspect water through an unverified filter. Follow the current boil-water or do-not-drink notice issued by the water supplier or health authority. Understanding what boiling and other home treatment can remove is useful, but public-health directions take priority and a do-not-drink notice must be followed exactly.
