To purify water at home, choose a treatment that matches the risk. Boiling or UV treatment can control microorganisms; sediment filters remove particles; activated carbon can reduce certain tastes, odours and compounds; and reverse osmosis can reduce many dissolved contaminants. No single method makes all contaminated water safe.

Filtering removes selected material, while disinfection controls microorganisms. “Purification” may involve one or both processes, depending on the water quality.

Improvised cloth or coffee filters may make cloudy water look clearer, but they do not make contaminated water safe to drink.

Does Boiling Make Water Safe to Drink?

Boiling can make water safer when the concern is microorganisms, provided you follow current NSW Health or advisory instructions. It cannot make water safe when it contains harmful chemicals, metals or salts.

Do not taste water suspected of sewage, chemical or unknown contamination. Do not boil chemically contaminated water unless authorities specifically direct you to; use the recommended alternative water supply instead.

During a Sydney Water-Quality Advisory

Follow the current Sydney Water or NSW Health notice exactly. Use the specified boiling or alternative-water instructions for drinking, preparing food and brushing teeth until the advisory is lifted. A normal household filter is not a substitute unless the notice expressly says it is suitable.

Never add household chemicals or estimate purification-tablet doses. Use only drinking-water products and follow the label and official advice.
