On treated mains water, sediment pre-filtration and appropriately rated activated carbon may suit common particle, taste and odour concerns; hardness, specific contaminants and private supplies need separate assessment.

Whole-house filtration treats water supplied to multiple taps, showers and appliances. If you only want finer treatment for drinking and cooking water, an under-sink point-of-use filter may be more suitable.

  1. Confirm the treatment goal: Use current supplier data for mains water. Arrange appropriate testing for a private supply, unusual water quality or concern about a specific contaminant.
  2. Check verified performance: Evidence should identify the contaminant, test method, rated capacity and operating conditions. Avoid unsupported claims that a system removes every contaminant.
  3. Size for peak flow: The rated flow must support likely simultaneous use. Compare pressure loss when the cartridge is clean and near its rated capacity. If flow has already fallen, distinguish expected filter resistance from a developing restriction.
  4. Compare capacity and maintenance needs: Check cartridge availability, stated capacity, replacement criteria and maintenance intervals. Learn the signs a whole-house filter needs servicing before water quality or pressure deteriorates.
