For most Sydney homes on treated mains water, the best under-sink water filter is a certified carbon system if the aim is to reduce chlorine taste or odour while maintaining good flow. Choose reverse osmosis only when you need verified reduction of specific dissolved substances.

Carbon or Reverse Osmosis?

Carbon filtration is generally preferable for taste and odour; reverse osmosis suits broader, specifically certified reduction requirements.

What to Check Before Choosing

Choose according to verified performance, flow, maintenance and compatibility with your kitchen.

  • Reduction claims: Check certification or independent test documentation for the exact system and cartridge. Confirm the named substance, rated capacity and test conditions. Relevant certifications may reference NSF/ANSI 42 for aesthetic effects, 53 for specified health-related effects or 58 for reverse osmosis systems.
  • Flow rate: Compare rated flow at a realistic supply pressure. Fine filters, multiple cartridges and some dedicated taps can reduce delivery.
  • Cartridge life: Check both the litre capacity and replacement interval. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement limit rather than relying on taste alone.
  • Ongoing cost: Compare annual cartridge and membrane costs, and confirm replacements are readily available in Australia.
  • Tap configuration: Check whether the filter supplies a separate tap, an existing mixer or a three-way mixer. Some systems cannot adequately supply a high-flow kitchen mixer.
  • Cabinet space: Measure the system, including any tank, and allow clearance to replace cartridges without dismantling plumbing.
  • Product requirements: Check pressure limits, servicing clearance, isolation, and any drainage or power requirements against the manufacturer’s specifications.
