A practical household water-pressure range is about 300–500 kPa (43–73 psi or 3–5 bar). Many homes perform comfortably around 350–450 kPa, although flow rate, pipework and simultaneous water use also affect performance. In Australian plumbing installations, 500 kPa is generally the upper limit at relevant outlets, subject to the applicable plumbing requirements.

One bar equals 100 kPa and approximately 14.5 psi. The practical lower end is not a statutory minimum, so a reading below 300 kPa does not necessarily mean the installation is defective. If several outlets are weak, identify why household water pressure is low before assuming the mains reading is the only cause.
Interpreting a pressure reading
Compare like with like. Static pressure is measured when all taps, appliances and other outlets are off. Dynamic pressure is measured while water is flowing and is usually lower.
Pressure is the force moving water through the system; flow rate is the volume delivered over time. A weak shower alone therefore does not confirm low supply pressure. Note where the reading was taken, whether water was flowing and whether the pressure fluctuated. A pattern recorded at different times can help explain why water pressure fluctuates.
Arrange an assessment if static pressure exceeds 500 kPa, fluctuates significantly or outlet performance is poor despite a normal reading. Do not dismantle pressurised pipework or adjust pressure-control equipment yourself.
