In NSW, the government hot water system rebate is generally an upfront discount on an eligible hot water system upgrade, not a cash reimbursement after installation. An Accredited Certificate Provider arranges the NSW incentive through the Energy Savings Scheme, and eligibility must be confirmed before work starts.
How the NSW incentive works
The provider assesses the proposed upgrade, calculates its recognised energy savings and creates the relevant energy savings certificates. Their value is applied to the quoted price, while the customer pays the remaining supply and installation cost and any required contribution.
The discount varies according to:
- the existing water heater
- the replacement system and its eligibility
- the property and installation conditions
- current certificate values and provider charges.
Eligible upgrades commonly involve replacing an existing electric or gas water heater with an approved heat pump system. Solar hot water eligibility depends on the current activity and product rules and should be confirmed before accepting a quote.
Basic eligibility and federal incentives
Eligibility depends on the customer and property, the existing heater, the proposed energy-efficient hot water system, recognised energy savings and current scheme requirements. The product must be eligible, required documents must be completed, and regulated plumbing and electrical work must be performed by appropriately licensed tradespeople.
Federal Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are separate from the NSW incentive. Eligible heat pump and solar hot water systems may create STCs if they meet current Clean Energy Regulator requirements. These are often assigned to the supplier for a separate point-of-sale discount.
Before work begins, ask the provider for written confirmation of:
- the property, existing heater and replacement system’s eligibility
- the NSW discount and any federal STC discount, shown separately
- the complete installed price and customer contribution
- the licences required for the plumbing and electrical work.
