A CCTV drain inspection involves feeding a specialist camera through an accessible drain, recording the pipe interior and interpreting visible defects. It is generally accurate for conditions the camera can clearly reach and see, but it cannot provide a complete diagnosis in every case. Pricing depends on access, pipe length and layout, cleaning requirements, site conditions, reporting needs, labour, location and whether other diagnostic work is required.
What does the inspection involve?
The plumber first reviews the symptoms and chooses a safe access point. The drain may need to be cleared or cleaned before the camera can travel through it and produce useful footage. The operator then records the line, notes visible defects and may use a sonde to estimate a defect’s position from the surface.
The findings should identify which sections were inspected, any access or visibility limits, the apparent fault and the recommended next step. A routine household drain inspection may start with visual and flow checks before CCTV is recommended.
What can it identify?
Clear footage from a pipe inspection camera can identify visually apparent issues such as:
- blockages and their approximate severity
- tree roots entering through joints or damaged sections
- displaced, open or misaligned joints
- grease, scale, sediment and other buildup
- visible corrosion, deformation and apparent cracks.
Recordings and still images provide evidence that can be reviewed. Camera distance readings and direction information can also help relate a defect to an approximate position. This evidence can be particularly useful when deciding whether a pre-purchase drain inspection is worthwhile.
However, CCTV shows only the pipe interior within the camera’s field of view. It cannot directly assess surrounding soil, the outside of the pipe or concealed structural conditions. Damage may remain hidden behind deposits, roots, murky water or standing water. Water in a drain may indicate restricted flow or a low point, but does not prove the source of an external leak.
What reduces accuracy?
Accuracy falls when the camera cannot reach the affected section or obtain a clear view. Common limitations include:
- Restricted access: Tight bends, junctions, severe offsets or collapsed sections may stop the camera.
- Poor visibility: Sewage, dirty water, grease, roots and heavy deposits can conceal defects.
- Pipe geometry: Bends and diameter changes can distort perspective, making size and orientation harder to judge.
- Equipment and interpretation: Image quality, camera orientation, setup and operator judgement affect whether a feature is identified correctly. Reflections, joint lines and surface marks can resemble cracks.
Identification and location accuracy are separate. A defect may be clear on screen while its exact surface position remains uncertain. A transmitter in the camera head, commonly called a sonde, can be traced using a compatible receiver to estimate location and depth. Interference, nearby metal, depth, site conditions and equipment setup may affect these estimates, so they are not survey coordinates.
If access or visibility is incomplete, cleaning, repeat footage or another diagnostic method may be needed before deciding the cause and extent of the damage. There is no credible universal accuracy percentage.
What affects the quote?
A quote may cover camera inspection only, or include drain cleaning, location work, recorded footage and a written report. Ask what is included, how limitations will be documented and how any extra work will be approved. Responsibility for paying for a CCTV inspection can also depend on who requests it, the purpose, pipe ownership and any tenancy or strata agreement.
