Yes, a drain survey is worth getting when blockages recur, pipe damage is suspected, or the findings could affect a property purchase, renovation or major repair. It may add little after a one-off blockage with an obvious cause that has been fully cleared and has not returned.
When a CCTV drain survey is useful
Consider an inspection when:
- clearing restores flow only temporarily;
- a plumber suspects tree-root intrusion, cracks, displaced joints, deformation or collapse;
- hidden drainage faults could affect an older property purchase or significant renovation;
- excavation or substantial drain work is proposed and the defect needs to be located first; or
- previous work has not explained or resolved the problem.
Its value depends on whether the findings will change the next decision, not on an assumption that every survey will uncover damage or avoid excavation.
What the inspection can and cannot reveal
A camera can provide visual evidence of accessible pipe sections. Depending on visibility and access, footage may reveal obstructions, roots, cracks, displaced joints, deformation, deterioration or collapse. Suitable locating equipment may help establish a defect’s approximate position.
CCTV does not guarantee a complete diagnosis. Standing water, deposits, tight bends, inaccessible branches and damaged pipework can block the camera or conceal defects. Professional clearing may be required before useful footage can be obtained.
Footage also may not establish a defect’s cause, depth, external condition or full repair scope. It should be assessed alongside the pipe material, layout, access points and drainage behaviour.
Before booking, ask:
- Which pipe sections will be inspected?
- Does the line need to be cleared first?
- Will you receive footage, defect locations or a written report?
- Are locating and reporting included in the quoted cost?
