Removing a flow restrictor is not automatically an offence in every situation, but it may make a shower or tap inconsistent with its registered WELS configuration or applicable installation requirements. In Sydney, check the specific product before making any change.

How removal can affect WELS compliance

A flow restrictor or aerator may be essential to a product’s tested flow rate and WELS rating. Removing, drilling or replacing it with an unrestricted component can change how the fixture performs, so it should not be assumed to remain compliant with its registration.

WELS legislation principally regulates the registration, labelling and supply of covered products. Whether a later modification is unlawful depends on the product, the work performed and any applicable NSW plumbing requirements.

Check the exact model in the manufacturer’s instructions and Australian Government WELS registration database. If the restrictor forms part of the rated assembly, leave it fitted. Seek advice from the WELS Regulator or a licensed NSW plumber if the product’s status is unclear.

If the water flow is too weak

Keep the original components fitted while determining whether the issue affects one fixture or the wider water supply. Low flow can also result from debris, a faulty fixture, a partly closed valve or a supply problem.

You can safely:

  • note which outlets are affected
  • follow manufacturer-approved instructions for cleaning exposed nozzles or a removable aerator
  • compare hot and cold flow without dismantling connected tapware or plumbing.

Do not modify the restrictor, concealed pipework or pressurised plumbing. If approved cleaning does not help, ask our licensed Sydney plumbing team to assess the fixture and supply, then recommend a compliant repair or replacement.
