This is not automatic approval: the required distance can vary with the regulator arrangement, ignition-source location and gas distributor’s current rules, so have the position verified before installation.

Where to measure from

Measure the gas meter clearance from the point specified by the applicable gas requirement, often the regulator vent, rather than automatically from the meter box or casing.

A regulator vent may release gas under abnormal conditions. Because a condenser contains electrical components that may act as ignition sources, its closest relevant component may need to remain outside the prescribed exclusion zone. Do not obstruct, extend or alter the vent yourself; gas equipment alterations require an appropriately licensed gasfitter.

What else affects the position?

The condenser must also:

  • leave the meter, regulator and isolation valve accessible for inspection and servicing
  • meet the manufacturer’s airflow, discharge and service clearances
  • comply with the gas distributor’s current requirements for the property
  • account for the specific regulator configuration and direction of measurement.

These requirements may make the necessary separation greater than 500 mm. Before mounting brackets or running services, have an appropriately licensed gasfitter check the gas clearance and the air-conditioning installer confirm the manufacturer’s siting requirements.
