Gas fittings in Sydney must be installed or altered by a person appropriately licensed or authorised for that gasfitting work. The installation must comply with NSW law, the applicable parts of AS/NZS 5601 and the appliance manufacturer’s instructions, then be tested, commissioned and documented as required.
Installation requirements
A compliant installation must account for the gas type, supply conditions, appliance demand and installation location. Key requirements include:
- Authorisation: Gasfitting is regulated work in NSW. A general plumbing qualification does not necessarily authorise every type of gas work.
- Pipe sizing: Pipework must supply connected appliances at the required operating pressure under demand.
- Components: Pipes, valves, regulators, connectors and jointing systems must be approved, compatible with the gas and suitable for their location.
- Pipework: Pipes require appropriate support and protection from corrosion, heat, physical damage and concealed services. Isolation valves and serviceable components must remain accessible where required.
- Appliances: Installation must meet applicable ventilation, combustion-air, flue and clearance requirements. These vary by appliance, location and building conditions.
The licensed gas fitter must identify which legislation, standards and manufacturer requirements apply before selecting equipment or beginning work.
Testing and compliance documentation
The gas fitter must test and commission the installation before it is used. This generally includes gas-tightness testing, operating-pressure checks under appliance demand and confirmation that appliances and their safety controls operate correctly. Where applicable, commissioning also covers combustion, ventilation and flue performance.
The gas fitter must complete and provide or lodge the NSW compliance documentation required for the work. The document’s official name, recipients, lodgement method and deadline can depend on the work and supply arrangement, so these details should be confirmed with Building Commission NSW before installation. Keep the completed documentation with the property records.
