To install natural gas in a Sydney house, check whether the network serves your address, engage an appropriately licensed gas fitter, apply through the relevant gas distributor or energy retailer, and coordinate the service line, meter and household pipework. The installation must be tested, documented and commissioned before use.
There is no standard connection price. Distributor charges and property-side costs depend on network availability, service-line distance, meter work, excavation, site access, appliance demand, pipe routes, materials, labour, current market conditions, compliance work and reinstatement. Ask the distributor and gas fitter to identify their separate scope and provide job-specific quotes.
Do not install, alter, connect or test gas systems yourself. Gas fitting is licensed work, and network assets may be handled only by authorised workers.
Steps for a new gas connection
Check availability at your address: Contact the gas distributor responsible for your area or use its connection service. Jemena operates much of Sydney’s gas network, but coverage is address-specific. Nearby connected homes do not confirm that your property can be connected.
Arrange a site assessment: A licensed gas fitter should assess access, planned appliances, total gas demand, pipe sizing and a suitable meter position. Do not build or landscape around a proposed position until the distributor approves it.
Apply for the connection: Follow the distributor’s current application process, which may involve an energy retailer. The application may require property, appliance, site and gas-fitter details.
Coordinate the work: The distributor or its authorised contractor generally arranges the service line and gas meter installation. Your gas fitter installs the downstream household pipework and connects the appliances. Confirm the exact ownership boundary and responsibilities with the distributor before work begins.
Complete testing and commissioning: The gas fitter must test the property-side installation, provide the applicable NSW compliance documentation and commission the appliances. Do not use the gas until the network connection, meter installation and gas-fitting work are complete.

- the approved meter and supply arrangement
- appliance demand and household pipe sizing
- site access and responsibility for each part of the work
- whether underground services must be located before excavation.
