Most modern gas stoves need electricity, although the connection is not always a visible plug. Depending on the model, the appliance may plug into a power outlet, require a fixed electrical connection or operate without mains power. Check the appliance data plate and manufacturer’s instructions for the exact requirement.
What uses electricity?
Gas supplies the cooking heat, while electricity may power:
- Ignition: an electronic spark lights the burner.
- Controls: displays, clocks and timers may require power.
- Appliance functions: oven lights and cooling fans may be electrical.
- Safety systems: some gas valves and interlocks rely on electricity.
Some basic cooktops use power only to create an ignition spark. Other stoves and gas ovens depend on electricity for controls or safe operation and will not work without it. Repeated clicking, a weak spark or a burner that does not light can indicate an ignition fault rather than a problem with the gas supply.
Do not use an extension lead or alter the specified connection. In NSW, a licensed gasfitter must handle the gas appliance connection, while a licensed electrician must complete new or altered fixed wiring. A conversion from an electric cooktop also needs the gas supply, electrical requirements, benchtop and clearances assessed before work starts.
Will it work during a power outage?
It depends on the model. Electronic ignition, displays and fans stop during a blackout, while powered valves or safety interlocks may prevent the appliance from operating altogether. Battery-ignition and older standing-pilot models can operate differently.
Only light a cooktop burner manually if the manufacturer’s instructions expressly permit it. Never manually light a gas oven or bypass an igniter, valve or safety device.
If a permitted lighting attempt fails promptly, turn the control off. If you smell gas, do not use flames or electrical switches. Leave the area and call your gas network’s emergency service from a safe location. Call Triple Zero (000) if there is immediate danger.
