A gas stove may keep clicking because of moisture, food residue, a misaligned burner cap, blocked burner ports, a damaged electrode or lead, a faulty ignition switch or module, or an electrical supply problem. No spark, an intermittent spark, clicking without ignition and delayed ignition all warrant attention, but symptoms alone do not prove which component has failed.
This advice applies to electronic spark igniters on gas cooktops. Hot-surface and glow-bar systems used in some ovens operate differently, so check how gas oven igniters differ and how long they last rather than applying cooktop advice to an oven.
Signs of an ignition problem
- No spark or clicking: Nothing happens when the control is turned to its normal ignition position. If other burners spark, the issue may be confined to one burner area.
- Weak or intermittent spark: The burner sparks irregularly or only sometimes. Spark colour alone is not a reliable test because appliance designs vary.
- Clicking without lighting: The spark operates, but the gas burner does not light. Turn it off rather than making repeated attempts, which may release unburned gas.
- Continued clicking: Clicking persists after the flame appears or after the control has moved out of the ignition position.
- Delayed ignition: Gas flows before the burner lights, sometimes causing a sudden flare or “whoomph”. Turn it off immediately and do not retry it.
- One burner repeatedly fails: If other burners work normally, the problem may be around that burner rather than the appliance’s complete ignition system.
Problems that can resemble igniter failure
Moisture, food residue, blocked burner ports or an incorrectly seated burner cap can prevent normal lighting even when the igniter works. The fault may also involve one of the electrical functions a gas stove relies on rather than the electrode itself.
With the appliance switched off and completely cool, you may visually check for obvious moisture, loose surface debris or a burner cap that is not seated as the manufacturer shows. Do not dismantle the appliance, remove panels, clear internal ports, adjust electrodes or test electrical or gas components.
How the igniter is tested and repaired
An appropriately qualified technician identifies the exact model and ignition system, safely isolates the appliance and follows the manufacturer’s service information. They inspect the burner assembly, electrode, ceramic insulator, ignition lead and connections, then test the electrical supply, control switch, ignition module and spark sequence with suitable instruments. Gas supply, burner condition and safe ignition also need checking because an electrical spark does not prove the gas side is operating correctly.
The repair depends on the confirmed fault. The technician may correct a burner assembly problem, repair an authorised connection or replace a failed electrode, lead, switch or ignition module with a compatible part. The appliance must then be reassembled, leak-tested where gas fittings were disturbed, and checked through its operating sequence. Gasfitting and fixed electrical work must be completed by appropriately licensed trades.
When to stop using the stove
Stop using the affected burner if ignition is delayed, gas flows without a flame, or abnormal clicking continues. Arrange professional assessment if the fault returns after the appliance is cool, dry and correctly assembled.
