Is my hot water thermostat or heating element faulty?

A failed element in an electric storage hot water system can cause no hot water, lukewarm water, slow reheating or hot water that runs out unusually quickly.

A failed element in an electric storage hot water system can cause no hot water, lukewarm water, slow reheating or hot water that runs out unusually quickly. These symptoms do not prove the element has failed; power-supply, thermostat and other faults can cause similar problems. Start with safe hot-water system checks, then have a licensed electrician test the system to confirm the cause.

Signs of a failing heating element

  • No hot water: The element may have failed completely, but the system may also have lost power or developed a thermostat fault.
  • Consistently lukewarm water: The element may not be heating properly. Temperature-control or tempering-valve faults can produce similar symptoms.
  • Hot water runs out quickly: The system may have reduced heating capacity, depending on its design.
  • Slow reheating: A noticeable increase in recovery time can indicate reduced or lost heating capacity.

If only one tap is affected, the problem is less likely to be the element. A heater or control fault is more likely when every hot outlet is affected.

Thermostat or element?

A thermostat fault can prevent heating, interrupt it too early or allow the stored water to become too hot. An element fault more often removes or reduces heating capacity. The symptoms overlap, so neither part should be replaced on symptoms alone. If temperature is the only concern, check which hot-water controls are safe to adjust without opening the unit.

How the fault is confirmed

A licensed electrician confirms a suspected failed element by isolating the electrical supply, proving the circuit is de-energised and testing the disconnected element.

A continuity test identifies a break in the element’s electrical path. Resistance is also compared with the heater’s rating and manufacturer data because there is no universal correct value. Further testing may identify insulation failure or leakage to earth. The power supply and thermostat should also be checked before the element is diagnosed as faulty.

Do not remove access covers or test the element with a multimeter. Fixed electric water heaters contain mains-voltage components, and electrical testing or repair requires an appropriately licensed professional.

Checks you can make safely

Without opening or touching the heater:

  • Check whether every hot tap is affected.
  • Note whether the water is cold, lukewarm or initially hot before cooling quickly.
  • Record whether the problem is constant or intermittent and whether reheating is unusually slow.
  • Visually check whether the labelled hot-water circuit breaker has tripped, without opening the switchboard.

Do not repeatedly reset a tripped breaker. If it trips again, or you notice burning smells, scorching or unusual electrical noise, keep clear of the unit and arrange urgent electrical assessment. Follow the safe reset guidance for your system and switch off the labelled circuit only if you can do so safely.
