Do not substitute a 9 kg gas bottle on an existing household LPG installation unless a licensed gas fitter confirms the complete setup is suitable. A 9 kg bottle may have an incompatible connection or be unable to supply enough vapour for the connected appliances. A bottle that physically connects is not necessarily safe or compatible.
Why a 9 kg bottle may not supply your appliances
A 9 kg bottle holds about one-fifth as much LPG as a 45 kg bottle, but capacity is not the only difference. LPG must vaporise inside the cylinder before appliances can use it.
Smaller cylinders generally have a lower vaporisation capacity, which can fall as the gas level or ambient temperature drops. The bottle must meet the combined demand of all connected appliances. Continuous-flow hot water and gas heating, for example, may require more gas than a small cylinder can reliably deliver.
An undersized supply can cause weak or unreliable appliance operation even when liquid LPG remains in the bottle.
What must be checked first
A licensed gas fitter should assess:
- cylinder valve and connection compatibility
- the pigtail and regulator type, pressure and flow capacity
- the total demand of all connected appliances
- the approved cylinder configuration and applicable clearance requirements
- the condition and suitability of associated hoses and fittings.
Never use an improvised adaptor, alter the regulator or modify fixed gas fittings yourself. Changes to an LPG installation are licensed gas-fitting work in NSW.
If you smell gas, avoid flames, smoking, appliances and electrical switches. Move away and call the cylinder supplier’s emergency service or a licensed gas fitter from a safe place. Call 000 if there is a fire or immediate danger.
