Your toilet is most likely leaking from the handle because the cistern is overfilling. A faulty inlet valve or obstructed, damaged or incorrectly set float can let water rise above its normal level and escape through the handle opening.

Common causes

The inlet valve should stop refilling the cistern at the set waterline, below the handle opening. If it fails to close or the float cannot move properly, the water level may keep rising.

Cisterns also have an overflow arrangement, often incorporated into the outlet valve. If it is blocked, damaged or incorrectly configured, water may reach the handle opening instead.

Less commonly, a loose or cracked handle fitting, or a worn washer where one is fitted, can make the leak worse. If the water level is normal, dry the outside and check whether condensation or water tracking from the lid is making the handle appear to be the source.

What to check safely

  1. Lift the cistern lid only if it comes away easily. Place it somewhere stable; some lids are heavy or attached to flush controls.
  2. Flush once and observe whether the float moves freely and the inlet flow stops before water approaches the handle or overflow level. Do not dismantle or adjust the mechanism.
  3. If the cistern keeps overfilling, gently close its accessible isolation valve by turning it clockwise. Do not force a seized valve, and stop if it begins leaking.
  4. Dry escaped water to reduce slip and property-damage risks, and stop using the toilet until the fault is resolved.

Contact a licensed plumber if the inlet flow will not stop, the isolation valve is seized or leaking, water may be entering a wall or floor, or an internal component needs repair or replacement. Our leaking toilet repair team can diagnose and repair an overfilling cistern safely.
