Pipes are most likely to burst at weakened joints, fittings or deteriorated sections. Failures commonly occur inside walls, under floors, in roof spaces and along outdoor pipe runs. Where freezing is possible, exposed or poorly insulated pipes in outdoor, subfloor and roof-space locations face the greatest risk.

Common locations
- Joints and fittings: Valves, elbows, flexible connectors and other connections can fail as seals and components deteriorate or move.

- Under floors: Leaks may develop in suspended-floor cavities or beneath concrete slabs, with water appearing at a wall or floor edge.
- Roof spaces: Pipes and fittings may fail because of deterioration, movement or damage. Do not enter a roof space to investigate. Fragile ceilings, heat and electrical wiring present serious hazards.
- Outdoor pipes: Exposed pipework, garden-tap connections and pipes entering outside walls are more vulnerable to weather, impact and corrosion.
Freezing can affect pipes in colder parts of NSW, but it is not usually the first explanation for a burst pipe in metropolitan Sydney. A crack, corrosion, excessive pressure, movement or installation defect can cause a pipe to burst without freezing.
What should you do if water appears?
Do not cut into walls, lift flooring, enter a roof space or disturb concealed services to find the rupture. Keep everyone away from sagging ceilings and standing water near wiring, appliances or the switchboard.
If water is escaping, turn off the normal main water supply only if the valve is safely accessible. Call 000 if there is an immediate electrical, structural or life-safety danger. Otherwise, arrange urgent assessment by a licensed plumber.
