Yes. A small crack in a pipe can enlarge or weaken the surrounding material until the pipe ruptures, although not every crack will become a burst. Its size alone cannot show when failure might occur, so arrange a prompt inspection rather than monitoring it indefinitely.
What can make the crack worse?
Pressure changes repeatedly stress the damaged area, while excessive pressure can accelerate deterioration. Pipe corrosion may also reduce the wall thickness and strength around a crack. Movement or poor support can place further strain on damaged pipework, particularly underground or inside a wall.
A slow leak escapes through a relatively small defect; a burst involves a larger rupture and much faster water loss. Warning signs may indicate leakage or worsening damage, but they cannot predict when a pipe will burst.
Look for:
- persistent dampness, staining or mould
- running-water sounds when taps and water-using appliances are off
- an unexplained rise in water use
- reduced or fluctuating pressure at several fixtures
What should you do?
Arrange a plumber’s assessment promptly, especially if the pipe is concealed, underground or actively leaking.
If water is escaping quickly:
- Isolate the water if safe: Close the property’s water isolation valve if you know where it is and can operate it safely. Do not force the valve or tamper with the meter.
- Keep away from electrical hazards: Do not enter standing water near power points, appliances, wiring or a switchboard, and do not touch wet electrical equipment. Call 000 if there is an immediate danger to life.
- Do not expose or patch the pipe yourself: Cutting into walls, excavating near concealed services or working on a pressurised pipe can be dangerous. Leave diagnosis and repair to a licensed plumber.
