Main elbow options
- Round or rectangular: Match the pipe profile exactly. For rectangular downpipes, check both the width and depth; similar-looking fittings may not connect.
- A-style or B-style: An A-style rectangular elbow commonly bends across the broad face, directing the pipe outward or inward. A B-style elbow commonly bends across the narrow face, creating a sideways turn. Terminology can vary between suppliers, so confirm the direction using the manufacturer’s diagram.
- Bend angle: A 45-degree elbow creates a gradual change in direction, while a 90-degree elbow makes a tighter turn where space is limited. Other angles may be available within specific product ranges.
- Material and finish: Choose a fitting designed for the existing metal or plastic downpipe system. Match the finish where appearance and material compatibility matter.
- Joint type: Check whether the fitting has socketed, spigot or crimped ends, including which end receives the adjoining pipe.
Choosing the right elbow
Measure the downpipe’s external dimensions and confirm its profile, material, joint type and manufacturer’s compatible size. Then check the required bend direction, angle, offset and clearance from the wall or eaves. Do not rely on A-style or B-style labels alone.
