For most sound residential gutter joints, the best choice is a purpose-made, exterior-grade neutral-cure roof and gutter silicone. It must be compatible with the gutter material and coating and remain flexible, waterproof and UV-resistant. There is no universally best brand.
What to check
Use the product’s current Australian technical data sheet, not just a “waterproof” packaging claim, to confirm:
- Compatibility: Check the exact metal, factory-applied coating or plastic. A silicone sealant for gutters that suits coated steel may not suit PVC or another surface. Confirm whether a primer is required.
- Movement and durability: The sealant must accommodate expansion and contraction without cracking or losing adhesion and be rated for exterior weather and UV exposure.
- Application conditions: Check permitted temperatures and whether the surface must be dry. Approval for damp surfaces does not necessarily mean the product can be applied in rain or standing water.
- Curing: Follow the stated rain-ready time, protection period and full-cure requirements. These are different measurements and can vary with conditions and bead size.
- Joint limits: Confirm permitted gap size, joint design and any backing-material requirements. Check colour and paintability if appearance matters, as many silicones are not reliably paintable.
Do not substitute bathroom silicone or acrylic gap filler unless its technical documentation specifically approves the intended exterior gutter application.
If runoff enters a rainwater tank used for drinking, use only a sealant whose manufacturer explicitly confirms suitability for that application. Check the current product certification and NSW Health guidance; a general roof-and-gutter label does not establish suitability for potable-water collection.
How it should be applied
A licensed roof plumber should first confirm that a failed joint, rather than a blockage, corrosion, incorrect fall or separated gutter, is the true cause. Where sealant is suitable, the professional removes failed material, prepares and primes the sound joint as the technical data sheet requires, applies the specified bead and allows the full cure time before testing. Roof access and roof-drainage work should not be attempted as DIY.
When sealant is unsuitable
Sealant is suitable only when the joint and surrounding gutter are structurally sound. It will not repair extensive corrosion, missing metal, distortion, sagging, ponding or a separated joint. Applying more sealant over a failed repair can conceal deterioration without fixing it. Check whether the leaking gutter needs repair or replacement before resealing it.
A leaking gutter can damage eaves, walls, ceilings and the ground beside a building, so recurring water escape needs prompt assessment.
