Gutters leak when water cannot drain freely or escapes through an opening. Common causes are blocked outlets or downpipes, failed joints and end caps, corrosion, cracks, impact damage, sagging, loose supports and incorrect fall. Heavy rain or concentrated flow from a roof valley can also cause overflow that looks like a leak.
Common causes
Blocked gutters or downpipes: Leaves and sediment can restrict the gutter channel, outlet or downpipe. Water then backs up and spills over an edge, particularly near an outlet or corner.
Failed joints, seals or end caps: Deteriorated sealant, movement between sections or a loose fitting can cause dripping at a seam, corner or gutter end. Standing water may make the problem worse.
Rust, cracks, holes or impact damage: Corrosion can create pinholes or larger openings. Hail, branches or ladder contact can also puncture, crack or distort gutters. Water repeatedly escaping from one point beneath the channel usually indicates a true opening.
Sagging or loose supports: A sagging gutter forms a low point where water collects instead of flowing towards the outlet. This can cause overflow and place extra strain on joints.
Incorrect fall: Gutters need a slight fall towards an outlet. Insufficient or reversed fall can leave standing water or cause local overflow.
Installation faults: Poorly fitted outlets, leaking fasteners, gaps or incorrect positioning at the roof edge can let water escape or run behind the gutter.
Insufficient capacity or concentrated flow: During intense rain, a roof valley can direct substantial water into a short gutter section. The gutter may overflow even when it is clear and undamaged if the roof-drainage system cannot receive and discharge that flow. Existing gutter guards can also contribute to overflow when debris blocks the mesh or the installation diverts runoff.
Repair or replace?
A sound gutter with one failed joint, loose support or small localised defect can often be repaired. Replacement is more appropriate when corrosion or cracking is widespread, sections are badly distorted, the fall or capacity is unsuitable, or repeated repairs have not stopped the leak. A roof plumber should assess the whole run, outlets, downpipes and fascia before recommending either option.
