How long is guttering guaranteed for?

There is no standard guarantee period for guttering. The length depends on the product, manufacturer, installer and written terms.

There is no standard guarantee period for guttering. The length depends on the product, manufacturer, installer and written terms. Manufacturer warranties generally cover eligible product defects, while workmanship guarantees cover installation faults and may run for a different period. It helps to understand what warranty or guarantee to expect on plumbing work in NSW when comparing the written terms.

An advertised term such as “up to 20 years” is a conditional maximum, not automatic coverage. Check which warranty applies to the fault and whether its conditions have been met.

What Coverage May Apply?

  • Manufacturer’s warranty: Covers specified defects in eligible guttering products. Conditions and exclusions may relate to installation, location, compatible materials, maintenance or alterations.
  • Installer’s workmanship guarantee: Covers qualifying installation faults for the period stated in the quote, contract or warranty certificate. It may exclude product defects, storm damage and later alterations.
  • Australian Consumer Law: Consumer guarantees apply in addition to voluntary warranties and cannot be excluded by warranty terms. They do not have a single fixed expiry date; the reasonable duration depends on the goods or services and the circumstances.
  • NSW statutory warranties: These may apply when guttering is part of residential building work covered by NSW home-building legislation. Coverage and time limits depend on the work and contract, so check current NSW Fair Trading guidance.

A product warranty can remain current after a workmanship guarantee ends, but it will not necessarily cover faulty installation. Likewise, a workmanship guarantee may not cover defective materials.

How to Find Your Guarantee Period

  1. Check the quote, contract, invoice, completion documents and warranty certificate.
  2. Identify who provides each warranty, its start date, duration and scope.
  3. Confirm the exact gutter product and the installer. If documents are missing, request the terms that applied when the work was completed.
  4. Read the conditions and exclusions, including any requirements concerning installation, environment, compatible materials, maintenance, storm damage or alterations.
  5. Keep the documents, proof of payment and relevant correspondence.

Do not climb onto the roof to identify products or inspect damage. Use documents and safe ground-level observations, or arrange an inspection by a suitably qualified professional. If the terms remain unclear, contact the warranty provider. If the gutter is already leaking, check what damage a leaking gutter can cause and how quickly, then contact our licensed leaking gutter plumbers for a safe inspection.
