There is no single hot water system warranty period. Cover varies by manufacturer, model, component and purchase date, while installation workmanship may have separate terms. Check the warranty supplied with the exact system rather than relying on a current brochure for a different model. A claim may be limited or refused if the system was incorrectly installed, altered, misused, serviced by an unlicensed or unauthorised person, or maintained contrary to its instructions. These exclusions do not automatically remove your rights under Australian Consumer Law.
Why warranty cover may be refused
Common reasons include:
- Incorrect or non-compliant installation: Damage caused by incorrect positioning, connections, valves or commissioning may be excluded. Installation can involve licensed plumbing, gasfitting or electrical work, so do not attempt it yourself.
- Unlicensed or unauthorised work: DIY alterations and repairs by unlicensed people may affect cover. Some warranties require approval from the manufacturer or work by an authorised service agent.
- Modifications or unsuitable parts: Altering the unit, bypassing safety controls or fitting parts not approved for the model may exclude related faults. Do not open or modify gas, electrical or pressurised-water components.
- Misuse or unsuitable operating conditions: Cover may be refused if the system was operated contrary to its owner’s guide or outside specified water-supply, environmental or operating limits.
- Missed maintenance: Some warranties require specified inspections, servicing or component replacement. Exclusions involving scale, sediment, corrosion or water quality vary by product, so follow the exact owner’s guide rather than a general maintenance schedule.
- External or accidental damage: Impact, flooding, vermin, weather exposure or power-supply problems may be excluded where they caused the failure.
An exclusion does not always void the entire warranty. The manufacturer may reject only the claim or component linked to the excluded event.
How to protect your warranty
Use appropriately licensed trades, follow the documents for your exact model and keep evidence of all relevant work.
- Retain the purchase and installation invoices, model and serial numbers, and any compliance documents issued.
- Keep dated records and receipts for maintenance required by the owner’s guide.
- Check the warranty supplied at purchase, as current online terms may differ from those covering an older unit.
- Contact the manufacturer or authorised service agent before repairs, alterations, relocation or replacement of parts during the warranty period.
- Do not dismantle the system to investigate a fault. Hot water systems can involve gas, electricity, pressure and scalding water; stop and use appropriately licensed trades.
A manufacturer’s warranty operates alongside the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law. A rejected manufacturer-warranty claim does not necessarily remove your right to a repair, replacement, refund or other remedy where a consumer guarantee applies. Check current ACCC guidance for your circumstances.
If the installation or repair history is unclear, our Sydney plumbing team can assess the system before further plumbing work is undertaken.
