Yes, but not every pipe or epoxy lining is suitable. A cured epoxy system can be used for drinking-water pipework only when the pipe remains suitable and the complete lining system is approved for its intended pressure, material and potable-water contact.
Internal lining forms a new coating or pipe-like layer inside the existing pipe. It can reduce the need to excavate or open walls and floors, although access points may still be required.
What determines whether relining is suitable?
A licensed plumber should assess:
- the pipe material and its compatibility with the lining system
- corrosion, deformation, failed joints and other damage
- access for inspection, cleaning and installation
- the internal diameter and how a reduced pipe diameter can affect flow and pressure
- operating pressure and pressure fluctuations
- whether fittings and connections can be treated reliably.
Lining systems are not interchangeable. Some create a structural liner, while coatings rely more heavily on the original pipe remaining sound. The proposed system should have current technical documentation confirming suitability for the pipe material, diameter, pressure and application.
Water-supply relining is also different from sewer relining. A liner designed for a gravity drain is not automatically suitable for a pressurised water pipe.
Can drinking-water pipes be relined safely?
Yes, but the complete potable-water lining system, including every component that contacts the water, must meet the requirements applicable to that installation. This may include evidence of testing to AS/NZS 4020 and WaterMark certification where required under the Plumbing Code of Australia.
Pressure pipe relining is not a DIY repair. Incorrect isolation, preparation or installation can cause flooding, contamination or system failure. Confirm which plumbing work requires a licensed plumber in NSW, then have the plumber verify the proposed system’s approvals and complete any regulated water-supply work.
When is replacement better?
Replacement may be necessary if the pipe is collapsed, badly deformed or displaced; cannot be cleaned or accessed adequately; or has no suitable lining system for its pressure and water use. It may also be preferable if lining would reduce the internal diameter excessively or the remaining pipe cannot support the proposed coating.
