Why has my tap stopped working?

A tap may stop working because its aerator is blocked, an isolation valve is closed, the handle or cartridge has failed, or the supply is interrupted.

Likely causes

  • One tap only: The fault is probably at that outlet. Gradually reduced or uneven flow often points to a blocked aerator. No flow may result from a closed isolation valve, failed tap mechanism or local obstruction.
  • Hot or cold only: The affected supply branch may have a fault. If there is no hot water, do not open or adjust the hot-water system; it can involve scalding water, electricity, gas and pressure.
  • Several or all taps: The property water supply may have been turned off, the network supply may be interrupted, or there may be a significant leak or restriction. If nearby properties are also affected, a network issue is more likely.

A gradual decline usually indicates debris or another restriction. Sudden loss of flow is more consistent with a closed valve, failed mechanism or supply interruption.

What to check safely

  1. Test other taps: Establish whether the problem affects one outlet, one area or the whole property.
  2. Compare hot and cold: Test both sides of a mixer tap without dismantling it. Stop if the issue appears connected to hot-water equipment.
  3. Check for recent isolation: Ask whether anyone turned off the property supply or an under-sink isolation valve. You can visually inspect an accessible valve, but do not force it if it is stiff, corroded or leaking; failure could release pressurised water.
  4. Check for an outage: If several taps have no water, check Sydney Water’s current outage information. Contact Sydney Water if an outage is listed or neighbouring properties have also lost supply.
  5. Inspect the tap: Look for a loose handle or visible debris around the aerator. Remove or clean the aerator only if the manufacturer’s instructions confirm it is user-serviceable. Do not dismantle the tap body, cartridge or pipework.
  6. Look for leaks: Damp cabinetry, unexplained running-water sounds or water emerging from walls or floors may indicate a concealed leak. If water is actively escaping, use the property isolation valve only if it is safely accessible, then contact a licensed plumber.
