A P-trap is designed to hold water after a sink drains. This water seal helps stop sewer gases, odours and pests from travelling through the sanitary drain into the room. Water inside the trap is normal and does not, by itself, mean the sink is blocked.
Why does a P-trap hold water?
The curved shape retains water in the bottom of the bend. When the fixture drains, wastewater pushes some of the existing water into the drainage system. Once the flow stops, enough remains to restore the seal.
Normal use replaces the retained water before it evaporates. A leaking trap, poor venting or pressure changes in the drainage system can reduce the seal faster than ordinary evaporation and should be assessed if the problem keeps returning.
How long does a P-trap take to dry out?
There is no fixed drying time. An unused trap may retain its seal for weeks or months, while hot weather, low humidity, strong airflow, a shallow seal or a leak can make it lose water sooner. The relevant factors matter more than a single estimated number.
If an accessible sink has not been used for a long time, briefly running clean water normally restores the seal. A shower P-trap can have different access arrangements, so use guidance suited to that fixture and do not remove fixed components.
A sewer odour that returns soon after the trap is refilled may indicate a leak, siphonage, poor venting or another drainage fault. Do not mask a persistent unknown smell with chemicals. If it could be natural gas, leave the property and call the gas distributor’s emergency service from a safe location.
Normal trap water or a blockage?
Water held below the outlet in the P-trap is normal. Water standing in the sink, rising when the tap runs, gurgling or unusually slow drainage can indicate a blockage in the trap or farther down the drainage system.
If the sink may overflow, stop using it and contain clean water only where safe. Keep clear of sewage or contaminated wastewater, and do not dismantle fixed plumbing.
