Neither is inherently safer. Approved copper and PEX are both generally suitable for drinking-water plumbing when correctly selected and installed. The safer choice depends on water chemistry, temperature, pressure, UV exposure, compatible fittings and installation quality.

Fittings, valves and jointing methods matter as much as the pipe. Mixing incompatible or unapproved components can make either system unsafe or unreliable.
If filtration is planned, first check how a water filter connects to copper or PEX so the pipe, valves and fittings remain compatible.
Choosing safely in Sydney
Choose a system approved for drinking water and suited to the property’s water supply, hot-water temperature, pressure, exposure and existing plumbing.
Where WaterMark certification is required, check that the product is certified and listed in the Australian Building Codes Board’s WaterMark Product Database. Approval must cover the intended use and relevant system components, not merely the pipe material.
A licensed plumber should confirm:
- potable-water approval and WaterMark requirements;
- compatibility between pipes, fittings and valves;
- corrosion conditions that may affect copper;
- heat, pressure and UV limits for the selected PEX product; and
- compliance with current Australian and NSW plumbing requirements.
