Yes. Water reaching wiring, power points, lights, appliances or a switchboard can cause electric shock, short circuits, corrosion and fire. Even a small damp patch may conceal wet electrical components. Keep away and do not touch affected equipment.
Electrical hazards and warning signs
Water can travel through walls or ceilings and affect concealed wiring or junctions. Possible consequences include:
- electric shock from wet fittings, equipment or conductive surfaces
- short circuits or earth faults
- corrosion of terminals and protective devices
- arcing, overheating and fire
- damage to appliances, switches, power points and lights
Warning signs include tripping safety switches or circuit breakers, flickering lights, power loss, buzzing, sparks, heat, burning smells, discolouration or moisture near electrical fittings.
A safety switch may trip when current leaks to earth, while a circuit breaker generally protects against excessive current. Neither means the area is safe. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping device or approach wet fittings to investigate.
What to do when water is near electricity
- Keep everyone away. Do not touch wet switches, power points, appliances, the switchboard or metal fixtures. Never enter standing water where electricity may be present.
- Turn off power only if it is safe. Use the main switch only if you can reach it from a dry area without approaching water or affected equipment. If in doubt, leave it alone.
- Stop the water only from a safe location. Close an accessible water shut-off valve if you can do so without crossing water or approaching electrical equipment.
- Evacuate for immediate danger. Leave and call Triple Zero (000) if there is fire, smoke, active sparking or another immediate threat.
- Call a licensed electrician first. They must assess affected electrical equipment, complete any electrical repairs and confirm when power can be restored. Do not unplug wet appliances, test equipment or restore power yourself.
- Call a licensed plumber once the electrical hazard is controlled. The plumber can isolate and repair the leak.
