Fully cured silicone sealant is generally stable and low risk under normal use. However, silicone that is only dry to the touch may still be curing underneath and releasing product-specific vapours or by-products that can irritate the eyes, skin or airways.
Dry to the touch is not fully cured
A silicone bead can form a firm outer skin before curing throughout. Full-cure time depends on the formulation, bead depth, temperature, humidity and airflow, so use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than touch or appearance alone.
While it cures:
- Ventilate the area as directed by the product label.
- Avoid contact with wet sealant.
- Keep children, pets and people sensitive to fumes away until the stated full-cure time has passed and any odour has cleared.

How to verify that cured silicone is safe
Check the documentation for the exact product:
- Label or cartridge: Confirm the full-cure time, required conditions and use restrictions.
- Technical data sheet: Check how formulation, bead depth and environmental conditions affect curing.
- Safety data sheet: Review hazards and precautions for the uncured sealant and its specific curing by-products.
- Manufacturer’s intended uses: Food-contact surfaces, drinking-water systems and aquariums require a product expressly approved or documented as suitable for that application.
Persistent tackiness, unusual softness or strong odour may indicate incomplete curing, but their absence does not prove suitability. If the documentation is unclear, ask the manufacturer before using the area.
Use the right product for the location
A fully cured product can still be unsuitable for a particular surface or exposure. For roof drainage, check which gutter sealant suits the joint and whether sealant is an appropriate repair.
Wet-area products have different requirements. Check when shower silicone can fix a leak rather than applying a general-purpose sealant over an unresolved fault.
