Confirm that the licence is current, matches the person or business offering the contract and covers the required work, such as plumbing, draining or gasfitting. Also assess insurance, relevant experience, written terms and recent reviews before authorising work.
Check the licence and who will do the work
Search the official register: Look up the plumber by name or licence number. Ensure the record matches the individual or business named on the quote.
Check the status, categories and conditions: A licence number alone is not enough. Confirm that the credential is current and its categories cover every part of the proposed work. Note any conditions or restrictions shown.
Confirm who is contracting and attending: Contractor licences, qualified supervisor certificates and tradesperson certificates grant different authorities. Ask who will perform the work and, if a tradesperson or apprentice attends, who will provide the required supervision. Check relevant credentials on the register where available.
If you cannot determine whether the licence covers the work, confirm it with NSW Fair Trading before proceeding.
Assess whether the plumber is reliable
A reliable plumber should provide clear, consistent information about the job and their business:
- Insurance: Ask for a current certificate of currency for public liability insurance and check that the insured name matches the contracting entity.
- Relevant experience: Ask about recent work involving the same type of system, particularly for drainage, gas or complex commercial plumbing.
- Written terms: Obtain a quote that states the scope, inclusions, exclusions, labour, materials and process for approving variations.
- Documentation: Confirm what invoice and job-specific documents will be supplied after completion.
- Recent reviews: Look for consistent feedback about communication, punctuality, workmanship and how problems were handled. Reviews do not prove that licensing or insurance is valid.
Warning signs
Do not authorise work while concerns about credentials, supervision or terms remain unresolved. Warning signs include:
- refusing to provide a licence number or insurance evidence
- expired, unsuitable or mismatched register details
- uncertainty about who will supervise a tradesperson or apprentice
- pressure to approve work or pay cash immediately
- refusing to provide a written quote or invoice
- vague scope, unexplained charges or unclear variation terms
- pricing that appears inconsistent with the stated scope.
