No, not every household needs one. A refrigerator filter is useful if you want to improve chlorine taste or odour, or reduce a substance covered by that cartridge’s certified claims. Otherwise, it may be optional if your refrigerator supports filterless operation or uses the correct bypass plug.

When is a filter worthwhile?

Most refrigerator filters use activated carbon. Performance varies: NSF/ANSI 42 covers specified aesthetic claims, including chlorine taste and odour, while NSF/ANSI 53 covers certified reductions of particular contaminants with health effects.

Certification does not mean a filter removes everything. Check the exact cartridge’s independent certification and reduction claims rather than relying on terms such as “pure” or “clean”.

In Sydney, mains water is treated and routinely monitored, so a refrigerator filter is not universally necessary. However, taste preferences or conditions within a property’s private plumbing may still make one worthwhile. The same filtered supply commonly serves the water dispenser and ice maker.

Can the fridge operate safely without it?

Usually, but only if the manufacturer confirms that your model supports filterless operation. Some refrigerators bypass the cartridge automatically; others require a model-specific bypass plug or cap. Without a filter, the dispenser and ice maker generally receive water at the quality supplied to the appliance.

Do not simply remove the cartridge or improvise a seal, as this may stop the dispenser working or cause a leak. Check the appliance manual or ask the manufacturer whether a bypass component is required.

An approved bypass is also preferable to leaving an exhausted cartridge installed. Once a cartridge exceeds its rated capacity, its certified performance is no longer assured and water flow may become restricted.

Use a filter when its verified benefit matters to you. Otherwise, use only the manufacturer-approved filterless configuration. Do not cut, modify or reconnect a pressurised water line yourself. If it leaks or needs alteration, safely isolate the appliance supply if possible, stop using it and contact a licensed plumber through our Sydney water filter team for a compliant connection.
