No chemical drain cleaner is safe for every blockage or pipe. Use one only when its label permits the affected fixture, pipework and septic system, if applicable. Never mix it with another cleaner, bleach, acid or household chemical. If the drain is fully blocked, a product is already present or you do not know what has been used, add nothing, keep clear and contact a licensed plumber.
Before using it
Read the entire label, including the first-aid instructions. Check whether chemical drain unblocker can damage pipes or toilets made from the materials in your installation. Do not use the product in a toilet, appliance, waste disposal unit or other fixture unless the label expressly allows it.
Before opening the container:
- Check whether drain cleaner, bleach, acid or another product is already in the drain. If you do not know, add nothing.
- Keep children and pets away.
- Ventilate as directed and avoid breathing vapour or mist.
- Wear the chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection specified on the label. Household gloves may not be suitable.
- Do not use a leaking, swollen or damaged container. Follow the manufacturer’s handling instructions.
Application, waiting and flushing
Follow the label because dosage, application, waiting time and flushing requirements vary between products.
- Clear the area: Remove nearby items, keep your face away from the drain and minimise splash risk.
- Handle the container as directed: Do not shake, squeeze, puncture or decant it unless instructed.
- Apply only the labelled amount: Do not estimate, add extra or use the product in a fully blocked drain unless the label permits it.
- Wait for the stated time: Keep the area ventilated and do not repeat the treatment unless permitted.
- Flush exactly as directed: Use only the specified quantity and temperature of water. Some products must not be flushed with hot water.
Do not lean over the opening during application or flushing. Never use a plunger or dismantle the trap while cleaner may remain in the pipe, as corrosive liquid could splash or escape. Stop and tell the plumber which chemical was used before they begin work.
If the drain remains blocked
Stop adding chemicals. Do not use another cleaner, bleach, acid or homemade mixture. Understand why bleach is not a routine drain fix, keep people away from the drain and retain the product label.
For splashes, swallowing, fumes or other exposure, follow the label’s first-aid directions immediately. In Australia, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 for advice, or 000 in a medical emergency.
